Menopause Mythbusters: Expert Q&A with Angelica Wyman, DNP

A More Graceful Approach to Menopause

Hot flashes. Restless sleep. Mood changes that seem to come out of nowhere.

Many women are told these symptoms are just a normal part of menopause—something to push through or tolerate. But while these changes are common, they don’t have to be inevitable.

Menopause is not the end of balance or vitality—it’s a biological transition that can be navigated with clarity and support. With the right data, lifestyle adjustments, and expert guidance, this phase can become an opportunity to optimize your health, not just endure it.

We sat down with Angelica Wyman, DNP, MSCP,  a Marek Health partnered medical provider and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) who specializes in women’s hormone optimization — to separate myth from fact and discuss how women can navigate menopause with grace and confidence.

Myth #1: “Poor sleep are just something I have to live with.”

Angelica:

These symptoms are common, but that doesn’t mean they’re normal—or that you have to live with them. Hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disturbances are signs of hormonal shifts, especially involving the reduction of progesterone during perimenopause.

The good news is that these can often be improved. Through personalized hormone support, nutrition, and recovery-focused habits, many women see a dramatic reduction in frequency and intensity. The goal is balance, not suppression.

Myth #2: “Hormone therapy is dangerous.”

Angelica:

This is one of the most persistent misconceptions. Earlier studies decades ago raised concerns about hormone therapy, but those findings were based on older, synthetic formulations and limited data.

Today, we have far more advanced options—like individualized bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)—which mimic your body’s natural hormones and are carefully dosed based on lab work and follow-up testing.

When properly managed by a qualified provider, BHRT can be a safe and effective tool for improving sleep, mood, bone health, libido, and long-term vitality.

Myth #3: “Menopause only affects older women.”

Angelica:

Many women are surprised to learn that perimenopause—the years leading up to menopause—can begin as early as the mid-to-late 30s and can last for a decade.

During this time, hormone levels fluctuate dramatically, leading to irregular cycles, weight gain despite no changes in diet or exercise, mood swings, and symptoms that can mimic burnout or anxiety. Early testing and optimization can make this transition far smoother and help prevent long-term issues like bone loss or metabolic changes.

Myth #4: “Testosterone is just for men.”

Angelica:

Testosterone plays a crucial role in women’s health, too—it supports energy, focus, motivation, and sexual well-being.

When testosterone levels drop, women may notice fatigue, low mood, low libido, or reduced muscle tone. For the right candidate, carefully titrated female testosterone therapy can safely restore balance and improve overall quality of life.

Myth #5: “If I eat clean and exercise, I don’t need hormone support.”

Angelica:

Healthy habits are foundational, but they can’t always offset declining hormone levels. Nutrition, strength training, and stress management all support your system, but sometimes your body needs additional help to stay balanced.

Hormone optimization isn’t about “replacing youth.” It’s about giving your body what it needs to function optimally during a new stage of life.

Myth #6: “Hormone therapy will make me gain weight.”

Angelica:

It’s actually the opposite for many women. When hormones are balanced, metabolism improves. You sleep better, recover faster, and manage stress more effectively—all of which support body composition and energy levels.

Unbalanced hormones, on the other hand—especially low progesterone, estrogen, thyroid changes, blood sugar changes or elevated cortisol—are far more likely to drive weight gain and fluid retention.

Myth #7: “Once my symptoms stop, I’m done with menopause.”

Angelica:

Menopause is a lifelong phase, not a temporary condition. Even after symptoms subside, maintaining hormonal balance, bone health, and cardiovascular support remains important.

The focus should shift from symptom management to long-term optimization—so you can age strong, energized, and mentally sharp.
