High-intensity statin with the greatest LDL-lowering potency (40 to 55%). Hydrophilicity reduces muscle/CNS penetration. JUPITER trial showed primary prevention benefit even with normal LDL but elevated hsCRP.

LDL-C reduction 45 to 55%

JUPITER: 44% MACE reduction in primary prevention

hsCRP reduction ~37%

How it works

Mechanism of action

Competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing hepatic cholesterol synthesis and upregulating LDL receptors. Pleiotropic anti-inflammatory effects include hsCRP reduction and endothelial function improvement.

The baseline panel.

Every Marek client receives this baseline panel before a provider review. Your provider may add additional biomarkers based on your health history, symptoms, and goals, pulling from 1,000+ available markers. See more biomarkers →

Clinical evidence

The research behind Rosuvastatin.

JUPITER Trial

New England Journal of Medicine (2008)

44% MACE reduction in 17,802 patients with LDL <130 but hsCRP ≥2.

ASTEROID Trial

JAMA (2006)

40mg produced significant atherosclerotic plaque regression by IVUS at mean LDL 60.8 mg/dL.

Safety profile

Commonly reported side effects

  • Myalgia (5 to 10%)
  • Headache
  • GI disturbance
  • Elevated transaminases
  • New-onset diabetes (class effect)

Less common but serious risks

  • Myopathy/rhabdomyolysis (rare)
  • Statin-associated autoimmune myopathy (very rare)
  • New-onset T2DM (~10 to 12% relative risk increase)
  • Asian patients: higher plasma levels, start at 5mg

Generally not appropriate for

  • Active liver disease
