How it works

Mechanism of action

Competitively binds to FimH adhesin on type 1 fimbriae of uropathogenic E. coli, preventing bacterial attachment to mannose receptors on bladder epithelium and allowing clearance through urination.

Clinical evidence

The research behind D-Mannose.

D-Mannose vs Nitrofurantoin for Recurrent UTI Prevention

World Journal of Urology (2014)

D-mannose powder (2g/day) was as effective as nitrofurantoin 50mg for UTI prophylaxis with fewer side effects.

Safety profile

Monitoring & safety information.

Commonly reported side effects

  • Bloating
  • Loose stools at high doses

Less common but serious risks

  • None significant at standard doses

Generally not appropriate for

  • Diabetes (monitor glucose, D-mannose is a sugar)

Typical monitoring

  • UTI frequency
  • Blood glucose (in diabetic patients)
