    Is Ezetimibe a statin?

No, Ezetimibe is not a statin. It's a cholesterol absorption inhibitor that lowers cholesterol levels by preventing dietary cholesterol from being absorbed in the intestines.

    Toggle Icon

    Do statins cause insulin resistance?

Yes, there is a slight risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes with statin use (about a 9-12% increased risk). That’s why it’s crucial to have baseline blood work and monitor your values regularly after starting statin therapy. People with pre-existing insulin resistance are at higher risk of developing this side effect.

    Do statins cause muscle pain?

Muscle pain or discomfort (also called myopathy) is a potential side effect of statins, though it is relatively uncommon. The risk increases with higher doses of statins and in people with other underlying health conditions. If you experience muscle pain while on a statin, consult your doctor. Sometimes adjusting the dose or switching to a different statin can help.

What should I monitor while taking cholesterol medications?

Regular monitoring of blood work is critical while on cholesterol-lowering medications. You should have periodic checks of liver and kidney function, cholesterol levels, and any potential side effects like muscle pain (if on a statin). Maintaining communication with your healthcare provider will ensure the medication is effective and safe for long-term use.

Can cholesterol-lowering medications interact with other drugs?

Yes, certain cholesterol-lowering medications, particularly statins, can interact with other drugs, including blood thinners, antibiotics, and antifungal medications. These interactions can lead to either reduced efficacy or increased risk of side effects. It's essential to tell your doctor about any other medications or supplements you are taking to avoid harmful interactions.
