Micronutrient Testing: Why It Matters for Health Optimization

Whether you’re experiencing unexplained health symptoms or simply want to ensure you’re in peak physical condition, micronutrient testing is an important place to start when optimizing your health.

Here, we explain the intricacies of micronutrient testing, what types of micronutrients you should be testing, and why knowing your micronutrient levels is essential to unlocking the healthiest you.

Why are micronutrients important for overall health?

Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals that the body needs to function correctly. They are essential for energy production, immune function, bone health, and the prevention of chronic diseases.

While people only need small amounts of micronutrients, getting the recommended amount in your diet is crucial. Micronutrient deficiencies cause life-threatening health problems but can also lead to decreased energy, increased risk of disease, and lower productivity levels. Fortunately, most deficiencies are preventable with proper nutrition, so knowing your levels with micronutrient testing is step one to preventing deficiency.

What is micronutrient testing?

Micronutrient tests provide a detailed analysis of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other critical nutrients. These tests identify specific deficiencies, allowing for targeted interventions.

Because micronutrients operate at a cellular level, only specifically targeted lab tests can adequately determine your levels. Micronutrient testing is typically performed with blood samples, but hair or urine sample testing is also possible.

Which micronutrient tests should be performed?

The most common micronutrient tests will test for Vitamin B12, folate (vitamin B9), magnesium, Vitamin D, and calcium. Blood tests may include comprehensive metabolic panels (CMP) and complete blood count tests. A CMP can provide a general view of B12, folate, and iron levels; provide a view of kidney and liver function, and measure sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, and other levels.

How do micronutrient deficiencies impact health?

Deficiencies can lead to a wide range of health issues, from fatigue and weakened immunity to more serious conditions like osteoporosis, heart disease, and neurological disorders. Suboptimal levels might not always produce immediate symptoms, making it crucial to identify and address them early.

Vitamins D, B6, B12, and folate are the most common deficiencies in the U.S., and being low in any of those micronutrients can lead to health problems.
