Why You’re Not Too Busy for Health Optimization

WHY IT MATTERS: The phrase “health optimization” may sound daunting and like another thing you don’t have the time for. But that’s not true. Health optimization refers to looking inward at your health and habits so you can make adjustments that help you operate at higher mental and physical levels.

If you asked our Marek Health professionals, we’d tell you that no one is too busy to put their health and longevity first. But here, we’ll dive deeper into why it’s important and why you have the time for it.

Why is health optimization so important?

Your everyday routines and habits tell a detailed story about your overall health. Without a solid understanding of the importance of your habits to your health, it’s easy to convince yourself that you don’t have the time to optimize your health. We’re here to challenge that.

If being active and eating healthy aren’t things you’re currently doing in your daily life, that’s likely taking a toll on your health—even if you can’t see it - yet. By changing your habits, you’ll protect yourself from obesity, diabetes, and countless other serious health risks

This makes health optimization essential and is one reason you’re NOT too busy to prioritize it. What’s more important than creating habits to improve and sustain your health and quality of life?

Start by changing your mindset

Changing your habits to prioritize your health is one of the most significant uses of time and energy, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. But it’s certainly doable with persistence, discipline, routine, and a shift in mindset.

Here’s why: if you tell yourself you’re too busy for health optimization, you will be. To adjust your habits and, thus, your health, you’ll need to start by changing your way of thinking.

For example, when you get hungry for an afternoon snack, reach for a fruit salad and water bottle instead of grabbing a bag of chips and soda. Instead of starting your morning with a coffee and pastry, make yourself a quick and easy protein shake.

Getting active might be more challenging to make time for. But here’s the thing—we’re all busy. Whether it’s work, running around with the kids, traveling, etc., something will always keep your health optimization from being convenient. Making it a priority may require you to wake up a little earlier to get a workout in or even get creative with how you work it into your day. This will look different for everyone—maybe a long family walk in the evening, a jog with the stroller, or investing in simple exercise tools for easy access.

How to change your habits

To effectively add health optimization to your priority list, the first step is shifting your habits. This isn’t a small feat, but there are strategies to help you sustainably create a new routine. Consider the following:

  • Set realistic goals: When new habits feel reasonable, you’re more likely to stick to them.

  • Convenience is vital: Set yourself up for success by starting with habits that are convenient to get started.

  • Practice your new habits every day: In the beginning, in particular, it’s essential to stay focused on your new healthy habits so that they truly become habitual. If you only commit to them sometimes, they’ll feel easier to discard.

  • Find a buddy: Having a friend or loved one join you on your health optimization journey is a great way to stay accountable and on track.
